The National Institutes of Health have published a study that shows the effectiveness of a new combination therapy for multiple sclerosis. This new treatment plan for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis involves high doses of immunosuppressive procedures coupled with stem cell therapy.
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the central nervous system. This can lead to speech difficulties, loss of motor control, chronic pain and weakness. The immunosuppressive procedures help limit damage done to the central nervous system by the body’s own white blood cells. This is an effective measure to help prevent further damage to the nervous system and to to help stop the progression of multiple sclerosis.
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health recently added stem cell therapy to the mix. Their hope is that after immunosuppression, the stem cells will be able to regenerate dead and damaged nervous system cells.
