Migrants and Human Rights Issues around the World and the Mission of Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund
In the last few years, people could see a widespread exodus of migrants around the world due to various reasons. It was due to war, internal conflicts, extreme poverty, oppression, safety, or exploitation. Considering the alarming number of increase in migrants, the delegates from various countries met at the United Nations office in Geneva in the first week of May 2017, to discuss the global impact of migration.
Interestingly, the countries are planning to come up with an agreement in 2018 to address the international migration in a comprehensive and holistic manner. It is great news for the people who are forced to leave their homeland due to various reasons, but due to the liberal migratory policies are getting increased criticism and opposition, it is yet to see whether the policy can deliver a favorable outcome.
Why there is a resistance expected for the upcoming policy of United Nations? Certain groups do not want to showcase humanitarian consideration to the migrants. The groups are either organized business groups or political parties. While coming to organized business groups, they do not want the citizenship granted to the migrants as it can damage the supply of low-wage migrant workers.
It should be noted that in every host country, migrants are facing exploitation in various forms such underpaid, harsh working conditions, slavery, etc.
Once the migrants receive the citizenship, they get the protection of the rule of the country, but the pressure groups want to abort such plans. Also, the politicians try to exploit the sentiments of the locals and churn vote for winning elections. Therefore, the migrants’ issues become a civil and human rights issues at the end.
However, there are many international and local organizations come up to support the migrants with funds and assistance. They choose to provide food, shelter, legal assistance, and more. Read more: Michael Larcey | Crunchbase
Some of those prominent organizations include Migrants Rights Network, National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Migrants Rights International, Migrant-Rights.org, Amnesty International, United Nations Human Rights Council, and more.
Efforts from individuals also have given efficient results in addressing the migrant issues in some particular locality. Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund is one such initiative that gave significant results in violations against the migrants.
It was established by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, the co-founders of Phoenix New Times, by the settlement amount they received for challenging their arrest by Maricopa County Sheriff in U.S. Court of Appeals.
It was on October 18, 2007, both the journalists arrested for reporting the practice set by grand jury demanding the reporters’ notes that are featuring the Sheriff Joe Arpaio. It is further revealed that the jury was even demanding the personal details of the readers of news that feature Sherriff.
Both the journalists decided to challenge the midnight arrest, and the Court of Appeals acquitted them and granted a settlement amount worth $3.75 million. Due to their long years of fights for human and migrant rights, the duo decided to set up a fund for migrants using the settlement amount. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund supports various groups that are promoting migrant, civil, and human rights along with civic participation and freedom of speech throughout Arizona.
