Individuals having Medicare are free to receive their health cover through a Medicare Advantage Plan or Original Medicare. However, there exist differences between the Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans. In terms of costs, an individual pays for Medicare premiums, coinsurance and deductibles under the Original Medicare. Under the Medicare Advantage Plans, an individual is only required to pay for the Medicare premiums and plan premiums if such a plan charges for the same. In most instances, under the plans, there are set co-pays and deductibles.
Based on the supplemental insurance, one can purchase a Medigap policy during certain times depending on one’s residence, as per the Original Medicare. However, it is not possible to purchase the Medigap policy to offset out-of-pocket costs through a Medicare Advantage Plan. Original Medicare only covers medically necessary inpatients as well as outpatient healthcare. It does not cover dental care, routine vision and hearing. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage Plan may cover some of the costs not covered by the Original Medicare.
